Leadership Advising

The Quran Compass.

Principles for Purposeful Leadership

Leading a school is a trust before it is a job. The Quran Compass is a framework for the people who carry that trust: a set of principles drawn from revelation, turned into questions a leader can actually ask themselves on a hard day.

Why a Compass

A compass, not a checklist.

Most leadership advice tells you what to do. A compass tells you which direction you are facing. School leaders rarely fail for lack of strategy. They drift because the pressure of the day quietly reorders their priorities.

Each principle below comes with four questions. They are meant to be sat with, not answered quickly, and they work as well for a leadership team meeting as they do for a quiet moment alone.

Principle One

Shura: Leadership Through Consultation

In the Quran, believers are described as those “whose affairs are conducted by consultation among them.” Surah Al-Shura 42:38

Who needs to be heard before I decide?

Am I seeking consultation sincerely, or only looking for agreement?

Have I made space for honest feedback?

Does this decision reflect justice for everyone affected?

Principle Two

Adl and Rahmah: Justice Held With Mercy

Adl, justice, gives people what they deserve. Rahmah, mercy, gives them what they need. Leadership that holds only one of them will eventually harm someone.

Am I fair without becoming harsh?

Am I merciful without compromising justice?

Do those I lead feel both protected and valued?

Would Allah SWT be pleased with the balance of Adl and Rahmah in my leadership?

Principle Three

Ihsaan Over Perfection

Leadership is not about being perfect. It is about striving for Ihsaan. Perfection belongs to Allah SWT.

Am I doing every task with excellence, sincerity, and consciousness of Allah SWT?

Am I treating each person with dignity and sincerity?

Am I leaving each person and responsibility better than I found them?

Do I lead with integrity, and continue improving every day?
